As Japanese film director Hirokazu Kore-eda’s award-winning movie “Shoplifters” will hit Chinese screens Aug. 3, Broadway Cinematheque will hold a movie exhibition showing nine of Kore-eda’s movies from Aug. 4 to 13.

Kore-eda won the Palme d’Or at the 2018 Cannes Film Festival for “Shoplifters.” According to the Harvard Film Archive, Kore-eda’s works “reflect the contemplative style and pacing of such luminaries as Hou Hsiao-hsien and Tsai Ming-liang.” Kore-eda has said he feels influenced by Ken Loach.

‘Nobody Knows’ (2004)

Time: 2 p.m., Aug. 4; 7 p.m., Aug. 12

Plot: In a small Tokyo apartment, 12-year-old Akira must care for his younger siblings after their mother leaves them. Yuya Yagira won the award for Best Actor at the 2004 Cannes Film Festival.

‘Still Walking’ (2008)

Time: 4:40 p.m., Aug. 4; 7:30 p.m., Aug. 7

Plot: “Still Walking” is a portrait of a family over roughly 24 hours as they commemorate the death of the eldest son.

‘Like Father, Like Son’ (2013)

Time: 7 p.m., Aug. 4; 7:30 p.m., Aug. 6

Plot: Ryota is a successful businessman. When he learns that his son was switched with another boy after birth, he faces the difficult decision to choose his true son or the boy he and his wife have raised as their own. The movie won the Jury Prize at the 2013 Cannes Film Festival.

‘Our Little Sister’ (2015)

Time: 2 p.m., Aug. 5; 7:30 p.m., Aug. 10

Plot: “Our Little Sister” tells the story of three sisters who live together in Kamakura and are joined by their 14-year-old half sister after their father dies. The film is based on the manga series “Umimachi Diary.”

‘After the Storm’ (2016)

Time: 4:30 p.m., Aug. 5; 7:30 p.m., Aug. 9

Plot: After the death of his father, a private detective struggles to find money and reconnect with his son and ex-wife. “After the Storm” was screened in the Un Certain Regard section at the 2016 Cannes Film Festival.

‘I Wish’ (2011)

Time: 7 p.m., Aug. 5; 7:30 p.m., Aug. 8

Plot: “I Wish” stars brothers Koki Maeda and Oshiro Maeda. The movie tells the story of two brothers who live separated in different cities — one with their father, one with their mother — and dream of reuniting.

‘Distance’ (2001)

Time: 2 p.m., Aug. 11; 4:25 p.m., Aug. 12

Plot: Family members of a cult-led mass suicide that contaminated the city’s water supply convene to commemorate the death of their loved ones and are joined by defected cult member and cult survivor Asano.

‘After Life’ (1998)

Time: 4:35 p.m., Aug. 11, 13

Plot: After death, people have just one week to choose only one memory to keep for eternity.

‘Maborosi’ (1995)

Time: 7 p.m., Aug. 11; 2:20 p.m., Aug. 12

Plot: A young woman’s husband apparently commits suicide without warning or reason, leaving behind his wife and infant. “Maborosi” won a Golden Osella Award for Best Director at the 1995 Venice Film Festival.
