Six Japanese animated movies directed or written by Hayao Miyazaki or produced by his Studio Ghibli will be shown free of charge at Shenzhen Library this week.
Miyazaki has attained international acclaim as a masterful storyteller and as a maker of anime feature films, and is widely regarded as one of the greatest animation filmmakers.
‘Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind’ (1984)
Taking place in a future post-ap ocalyptic world, “Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind” tells the story of Nausicaa, the young princess of the Valley of the Wind. She becomes embroiled in a struggle with Tolmekia, a kingdom that tries to use an ancient weapon to eradicate a jungle of mutant giant insects.

‘Whisper of the Heart’(1995)
“Whisper of the Heart” tells a love story between a girl who loves reading books, and a boy who has previously checked out all of the library books she chooses. The movie is directed by Yoshifumi Kondo and written by Miyazaki.

‘Porco Rosso’ (1992)
“Porco Rosso” revolves around an Italian World War I ex-fighter ace, now living as a freelance bounty hunter chasing “air pirates” in the Adriatic Sea. However, an unusual curse has transformed him into an anthropomorphic pig. Once called Marco Pagot, he is now known to the world as “Porco Rosso,” Italian for “Red Pig.”

‘The Cat Returns’ (2002)
After helping a cat, a 17-year-old girl finds herself involuntarily engaged to a cat prince in a magical world where her only hope of freedom lies with a dapper cat statuette coming to life. The movie is directed by Hiroyuki Morita and produced by Miyazaki’s Studio Ghibli.

‘Spirited Away’ (2001)
“Spirited Away” tells the story of Chihiro, a moody 10-year-old girl who, while moving to a new neighborhood, enters the world of kami (spirits) of Japanese Shinto folklore. After her parents are transformed into pigs by the witch Yubaba, Chihiro takes a job working in Yubaba’s bathhouse to find a way to free herself and her parents and return to the human world.

‘Princess Mononoke’(1997)
“Princess Mononoke” is set in the late Muromachi period (approximately 1336 to 1573) of Japan with fantasy elements. The story follows the young Emishi prince Ashitaka’s involvement in a struggle between the gods of a forest and the humans who consume its resources.
